Physical Education

Physical Education lessons and units at Transfiguration School are based on the National Physical Education standards in accordance with being a Christian athlete that tries their best in everything they do.

  • K – 2nd grade focus is on body movements, listening, following of directions, small team games, individual skills and being a good teammate/friend. We play some sports, but mostly creative games, team games, and individual skills. We also learn about locomotor skills and the development of physical fitness. Each day is fun and exciting, while we do our best to master new skills. We focus on TRYING everything, while playing with great sportsmanship. We have fun, playing hard together!

  • 3 -5th grade focus is on being and staying active. We work on different ways to stay healthy and fit. Our class is based on effort and being a great team player. We learn about being respectful to everyone who plays, including by not limited to; the officials, other players and parents. We strive for greatness every day, no matter the score or circumstance. We learn that our actions define us and we strive for great sportsmanship. We try everything. We have Physical Fitness testing twice year that focuses on physical strength, mental strength, endurance and flexibility. We live by “the hardest skill to master, is the one you don’t practice.”

  • Middle School students’ focus is on the development of game skills. We focus on many sports, their strategies and rules. We compete daily, learn good sportsmanship and are always respecting the officials and the other team. We are looking for lifelong learners of the importance of staying active and spending time keeping your body healthy. We look to play with each opportunity like a Christian Athlete, one who plays fair, with respect, and does his/her best no matter the score or arena. We have written and skills tests, but are graded predominately on effort! We have Physical Fitness testing twice year that focuses on physical strength, mental strength, endurance and flexibility.

Spanish

The Spanish language program emphasizes learning written and verbal communication skills and developing cultural awareness. In the kindergarten through third grade classes the students learn vocabulary and basic phrases and explore the Spanish language and through music and art. In fourth and fifth grade the students begin basic grammar concepts and vocabulary is reinforced and expanded. The students are assessed through written tests, oral presentations and projects. All of the elementary students learn about various cultural traditions and celebrations. The middle school program focuses on learning formal grammar to improve writing, reading, speaking and reading comprehension skills. Middle school students research Spanish-speaking countries to learn about geography, history, government, religion and culture. The students learn prayers and participate in a mass in Spanish.

Music

Music is offered to students in Preschool through Eighth Grade. Students will age-appropriately demonstrate basic music literacy, develop an appreciation of music as an art form, evaluate music as it contributes to society, understand music’s place in cultures of this country and the world, display performance skills and concert etiquette, and understand music’s role in the liturgy.   Students imitate, improvise, compose, and evaluate music as they sing, move, and play instruments. Students participate in Christmas and Spring Concerts and the yearly talent show.  All students use unpitched percussion and Orff instrumentarium.  Recorders are studied in grades 3 - 5 with the Recorder Karate Program.  Middle School students study ukuleles. The MN State Standards and National Standards are used to measure benchmarks.
